The Biggest Mistake We Made Blogging
We have previously mentioned that we have over 20 blogs and some make money for us and others don’t. Actually to be fair they all make money but some only make a few dollars a month whilst others make thousands.
So it stands to reason that over time we have learned a thing or two about owning and running a blog but it took a lot of work and we made quite a few mistakes before we got to where we are today.
Out of all of those mistakes, there was one really big one that affected our online business for many years…and it was unfortunate that it took us so long to realise what we were doing wrong as it really affected our income potential and kept us in our day jobs for a lot longer than we really wanted. Once we caught on however our income started to grow significantly and we knew then that we were well on our way.
So What Were We Doing Wrong?
It’s simple really…we weren’t providing value to our readers. Now, I can just hear you all groaning right now thinking that you already know this. However, I can guarantee that if you have been online for a while and you aren’t succeeding, it’s more than likely that you aren’t providing your readers with enough valuable information to keep them coming back for more.
Don’t get me wrong, a bit of promotion helps but all the promotion in the world won’t do any good unless you have something worth promoting.
What Does ‘Providing Value’ Actually Mean?
This is not an easy one to answer because one person’s definition of ‘value’ will be different from the next. It’s a bit like saying ‘how long is a piece of string’. So all I can do is give you my definition of ‘value’ – this is what has worked for us.
Value means:
- giving away your secrets
- going the extra mile to help others
- writing honest and unbiased reviews
- providing way more than your readers expect
- focusing on your reader first before focusing on the money
- linking to other blogs if it helps your readers (even if they are in competition to you)
Show Me the Money…
We were definitely guilty, in the past, of not providing quality content and to be completely honest, it was only because our primary focus was on making money. After all that’s what everyone involved in affiliate marketing aims to do. But once we turned our approach around, the money just started to flow.
I really love this blog post which sums it up beautifully using a real life example – Focus on Providing Value, Not Making Money.
Are YOU providing value?
If money is your primary focus then step back and take a look at your blog posts. Are they short and lacking any real substance? Are you just churning out content just for the sake of creating as many pages as possible so you can get a few Adsense clicks? Are your reviews simply rehashed information listing the features copied over from the merchants website? Are you copying content from article directories or worse still, from other peoples blogs?
If you are doing any of these things, then you will never really make the big dollars online.
Change your approach to what you are doing and the money will follow.

I’ve just completed my first ever contest (no plug – it’s now finished!) and I originally started with 6 prizes. A few tools and some of my time but then through other suddenly the prizes leapt to 10.
What’s my point?
The lovely feedback and new blogging colleagues I’ve gained has been awesome just by doing the contest.
My advice…give as much as you can away.

Very true Andrew. Giving has so many benefits. The industry we are in is in many ways a very money orientated one – we tend to focus on this first. By changing that orientation to focus on giving first, our output changes completely and it becomes more valuable. This in turn means our readers are happier, stay longer and visit more often.
I’m a big believer in the philosophy that you give away what you want to receive. Zig Ziglar says that you can have anything you want in this world if you help enough people get what they want.
I really enjoy reading this blog. It is nothing like what I thought it was going to be when I first visited it a few weeks ago. Your approach to the subject resonates with me.

Exactly Brad – I believe the more you give the more you get in life.
And I’m glad you are liking the blog. I’m trying to write content that reveals a bit about what we went through to get where we are today. I personally used to like reading success stories but also the disasters along the way as it made me feel a bit better about where I was at the time.
Am I providing value? I like to thinks so. My blog being a general blog covering a variety of topic makes it a little difficult sometimes. It’s almost impossible to guarantee that every blog provides something of value to every reader.
Hopefully my style of writing, in that I try to entertain as well as being informative, and believe me I don’t think it always works
, helps to fill in the gaps.

I guess we are never going to please everyone no matter how hard we try. But we can do our best to provide as much value as possible…(and I don’t think you have a problem with providing value).
Well, how nice of you to say so Paula, and may I return the compliment. That is the best thing about blogging, the fact that you meet all these new people and you learn a whole lot of new things. One of the pluses of modern technology.

Actually that was something I did to my self before, and I am trying hard to avoid it in the future! I found your post very useful and has lots of value!

Thanks Hesham. Glad you stopped by to comment.
Am I providing value? hmmm…that is a very good question. My blog is really just a journal of thoughts and revelations I happen upon. It’s not really meant to be a guide or a how to blog. Although I would like to make some money with it, that is not my primary focus. So if my readers like to read my rambling thoughts then I would have to say yes I am providing some sort of value.
I hope….

You’re most likely on the right track since you are not making the money your primary focus…you really can’t help but provide value when you think in this way.
I think most of us believe we’re giving value, but I’ll say that trying to figure out what your audience wants is a difficult process. For instance, I write a finance blog, and my thought was to cover news things that have something to do with a financial topic, and give an opinion on it. Now, to me that’s value, but maybe to someone else they’d like me to try to give them an answer on how to overcome the issue. I would never want to put myself in Jim Cramer’s position so I won’t go that route, but that could be a sticking point with some visitors, and if it is, well, that’s on me because I never want anyone coming to me for that kind of financial advice with their money on the line.
So, that question of value still remains scary and elusive. But it’s a very good points.

That’s right Mitch – it’s all relative really since what one person thinks is valuable another will think quite differently.
